Former USA rapper Mos Def, also known as Yasiin Bey has been announced as the creative director for New York/Cape Town based fashion brand Unknown Union. Yasiin is scheduled to take on the influential role of overseaing styles, collaborations and the overall design concepts of the clothing brand.

The socially conscious lyricist gained his rise to hip-hop stardom with such hits as “Mathematics”, “Life in Marvelous Times” and more. He became mainstream when he starred in Brown Sugar as Queen Latifah’s love interest. Since then, the rapper changed his name from Mos Def to Yasiin Bey and resides with his family in South Africa.

Unknown Union struck the deal with the legendary hip hop artists Although Yasiin still faces threats by the South African authorities regarding his deportation. The future work will also include a collaboration with his media channel and design collective A Country Called Earth.

Unknown Union’s new direction with Yasiin was exemplified by the launch of The Original Royals Collection made from the traditional blankets of the Basotho people. These blankets have a history that dates back over 150 years and form the basis of a proud living tradition and cultural legacy that is interwoven into the very social fabric of Basotho life.

Authentic Basotho blankets are exclusively manufactured by Aranda Textile Mills in partnership with the royal family of Lesotho. Unknown Union is the only company in the world that has been granted the right to create apparel from this national treasure.

The Original Royals Collection were debuted at (capsule) Las Vegas Feb. 15th – 17th. For more details on the project and others by Unknown Union, visit www.unknownunion.co.za
