Albino Models Are Changing The Perception Of Albinism

diandra-3

People with Albinism face so much danger in some African countries especially in nations like Malawi and Tanzania where their body parts are mutilated and traded as they believe that the Albinism trait has some magical power which can be used in rituals to bring good luck.

Some beliefs and superstitions even go further to claim that having s*x with an albino cures HIV/AIDS (smh).

According to statistics, 1 in 17,000 children is born with a genetic disorder and one of those genetic disorders is Albinism.

A person with Albinism is just a human being with little to no melanin. It’s that simple. It’s a shame that tradition and uncouth superstitious beliefs have led kids with albinism in Africa to drop out of school and live in fear due to prejudice.

On a lighter note though, Albino models are taking center stage abroad with Designers going for a more exotic look and the results are everything!

Shaun Ross is an American professional fashion model, known for being the first male albino pro model. Diandra Forrest is another famous African-American albino model who is also an Actress. Back here in Africa, precisely South Africa, we have Thando Hopa who is a Lawyer and part time model. Thando is changing perceptions of albinism in Africa a step at a time and she’s a true inspiration!

Check out their incredibly amazing photos:

These models are a true inspiration to the albino community and hopefully, they can help spread more awareness of the dangers that the albinos in Africa face.
